About us

Occupy Wild Salmon (WSOV) is a workgroup that was established out of OccupyVancouver on Oct 16, 2011.  We are a group of concerned citizens of the 99% who would like to see the protection of all Wild Salmon stocks in BC. We believe that all species of Salmon are Sacred and should be treated with the same respect Mother Nature  intends. Salmon is not only a strategic food resource on the West Coast, it is a keystone species of the environment.  Over 130 different West Coast Wildlife species feed off of Salmon, including bears, birds, coyotes and whales.  West Coast Wild Salmon are at serious risk.  At one point over 100 Million Sockeye Salmon returned every year to spawn, and tragically in 2009 less than 1 M returned, which in turn triggered a federal inquiry (Cohen Commission).  The commission concluded on Monday December 19th, the judge’s findings are expected to be released in September 2012.

Also known as the REDD Block, we are peaceful warriors fighting for all Wild Salmon, their habitats and the systems that they migrate through.  We fight for the protection of salmon, through creative, peaceful, non-violent and sometimes civilly disobedient, direct action.

We rely on multiple sources of expert and scientific opinion as the basis of our  knowledge. We hear all voices and opinions and engage in respectful dialogue and reserve the right to peacefully disagree.

For schedule of events and actions, see the schedule on the OccupyVancouver website. We can also be contacted by email occupywildsalmon(at)gmail.com
